Tuesday Treat: St Olaves

St Olaves (named for the Norse Saint Olaf) is a small village on the River Waveney, the natural border of Norfolk and Suffolk.

23 Mar 2021

We passed through here on our way to Fritton Woods (See Sunday Picture Post) and stopped a while to explore the ruins of the C13th priory…

23 Mar 2021
23 Mar 2021

It’s free to enter, so we can’t complain at lack of upkeep

23 Mar 2021

River Waveney rises near Thetford, just 100yds from the rising of the Little Ouse. The Little Ouse flows west, the Waveney east.

23 Mar 2021

The Waveney empties into Breydon Water where it joins with the Yare and the Bure to flow into the North Sea

23 Mar 2021

It is one of the many centres for Broads’ Cruisers; the boat yards are busy with people preparing for the new season.

23 Mar 2021

We didn’t expect to see this sailed barge from Amsterdam…

23 Mar 2021

But we were expecting this… the smallest windmill I’ve seen

23 Mar 2021

We saw loads of flowers along the way too. Perhaps I’ll add those to next week’s treats

Interview with Crispina Kemp, author of Learning to Fly — Sammi Cox

I am really excited to be able to share this fabulous interview with my talented blogging friend and author, Crispina Kemp. Her next book, Learning to Fly, is being released 1st April 2021. I was lucky enough to beta read this story, and I loved it as much as the five book series, The Spinner’s […]

Yonder is where I want to be
Yonder where you went from me
Yonder whence you call to me
Yonder beyond what I can see
Yonder lies another world
Yonder where my heart is furled
Yonder where, by winds aswirl,
My love was hurled.

Sunday Picture Post: Fritton

7:20 am 23rd March, we hop on a bus to Belton, a village a few miles southwest of Great Yarmouth. From Belton we walk a very Sandy Lane to Fritton Woods (aka Waveney Forest). The white flowers of blackthorn are everywhere

23 Mar 2021
23 Mar 2021

But we’re not going directly into the woods. We’re to detour first… yeeks, a main road. Love this old barn…

23 Mar 2021

A footpath leads us away from Fritton…

23 Mar 2021

Again we detour… now into a swamp (we’ve not been here before)

23 Mar 2021
23 Mar 2021

And by circuitous route we arrive at St Olave’s where four drakes provide guard for one sitting duck (don’t ask, I don’t know)

23 Mar 2021

And an elder swan seems to be chastising an immature. I wonder what the story there

23 Mar 2021

Skirting the grazing marsh, the path clings close to the woods, and is muddy. And look here, the field sprouts pylons as if they’re a crop!

23 Mar 2021

And finally into the woods. Although a pine plantation, native trees are encouraged. But native is deciduous and they’re not yet in leaf. Two/three years back wide swathes of pine were felled, but already regeneration is underway. Natural, not planted

23 Mar 2021

I think it’s Portuguese Heather; our native heathers don’t flower this early

23 Mar 2021

Hope you enjoyed our walk. Tuesday’s Treat will focus on St Olaves. See you then.

St Olaf Didn’t Live Here

23 Mar 2021

St Olaf’s Priory (remains of) at St Olaves on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. Guess it could do with a cleanup and maybe a fresh coat of paint.

CCC124: Mind The Steps

Crimson’s Creative Challenge #124

There’s a ghost on the steps.

Don’t be ridiculous!

But there is, I tell you.

There are no such things.

It’s a Roman soldier, I’ve seen it.

Yea? I think not.

You don’t believe me? Then come with me. Now do you see?

See what? I see nothing except those steps down.

On the tree. Look? Lean over, get closer, you’ll see it better.

Arrrgghhhh!

Oh dear. Well, there’ll be a ghost there now. That’s what he gets for disbelieving.

Tuesday Treat: Spring Flowers

Hi. As promised, the flowers seen on last Friday’s walk. Enjoy

19 Mar 2021

Daffs… of course; probably garden escapees but now growing wild

19 Mar 2021

19 Mar 2021

Blackthorn, Quick-thorn, Sloe, call it as you will

19 Mar 2021

19 Mar 2021

19 Mar 2021

Alexanders. Always early to flower

19 Mar 2021

And the low-growers…

19 Mar 2021

19 Mar 2021

These have to flower early to catch the light before cast into shade by their taller neighbours

19 Mar 2021

19 Mar 2021

And I promised you pussy-willow. An entire lane was turned silver with these

19 Mar 2021

19 Mar 2021

Hope you enjoyed. I’m walking the camera again today. Let’s see what new treats I can bring home

You are my Sun

Oct 2020

You are my sun
You keep my warm
You light my life
When day is done
You carry me down
To enfold me
In your netherworld of dreams
Yet, my love, you are so hot
I’ll burn if at a distance I am not
Thus for safety I’ll remain orbiting
