My Friend

Pavonine says this friend of mine
And thinks she’ll trip me
Defeat me
Mute my words and numb my hand
Ha! Little does she know me.
No country mouse me
No shrinking violet
No parson’s daughter
No penitent whore
No better behaved
Not knowing better than I ought-ta
(Not sure of that line
Neither sure of that friend of mine)
Pavonine
Calling all you Beau Brummels
Who deck your lordships up to the gunnels
Pavonines, bow to this friend of mine

CCC162: The Parish Eagle

Little Robin in the churchyard hiding
What was it the bird found frightening
Was the old vicar sermonising
Or the new organ player improvising

It was the eagle, parish-bought
And in stone realistically wrought
To sit above the south porch-door
That frightened young Robin to his core

Crimson’s Creative Challenge #162

Here’s how it works:

Every Wednesday I post a photo (this week it’s that one above.)
You respond with something CREATIVE

Here are some suggestions:

  • An answering photo
  • A cartoon
  • A joke
  • A caption
  • An anecdote
  • A short story (flash fiction)
  • A poem
  • A newly minted proverb, adage or saying
  • An essay
  • A song—the lyrics or the performance

You have plenty of scope and only two criteria:

  • Your creative offering is indeed yours
  • Your writing is kept to 150 words or less

If you post a link in the comments section of this post I’ll be able to find it
If you include Crimson’s Creative Challenge as a heading, WP Search will find it (theory)
by ‘Searching’ in the WP Reader (fingers crossed)

Here’s wishing you inspirational explosions. And FUN

Sunday Picture Post: Last of November Walks (Part 2)

22nd November now seems so long ago, but let’s refresh memories. A bus across the grazing marshes take us to Acle where we squelch through Damgate Carr (carr = wet woodland) and over the pastures to join with a dry-ish road (yay!) to Tunstall.

Now to continue. We’re walking on an ancient shore, for where now is marsh used to be the mudflats of a wide estuary

22 Nov 2021

This farmstead sits like an island in a sea

22 Nov 2021

And into Halvergate

22 Nov 2021

22 Nov 2021

Looking out to the marshland. That once was sea.

22 Nov 2021

There’s now so few inhabitants in Tunstall, its parish has been combined with Halvergate

22 Nov 2021

At Halvergate church I found mention of present-day relatives of the lady who married my several-times great-grandfather in the late C18th

22 Nov 2021

Time to turn around and return to Acle…

22 Nov 2021

Wide skies and fantastical cloudscapes has attracted many artists here

22 Nov 2021

And back to the pastures where we walk alongside the Fleet

22 Nov 2021

22 Nov 2021

And back through Damgate Carr where I stop for a moment… unable to resist interesting reflections

22 Nov 2021

That’s all folks for now.

I have managed to dodge the rain and evade the winds to get out for a hike this week… so I have fresh photos for next Sunday’s Picture Post.

Hope you enjoyed.

The Smuggler

image: Colin Behrens on pixabay

Sonia heaved her relief at passing through customs without being stopped. Now to get out of the airport and find the car.

It was where they’d agreed. She fumbled for her keys, the spares given to her before the trip.

Door unlocked.

And in.

Now to switch facemasks. She tucked the used mask into the glove compartment – along with the five diamonds sewn between the layers.

A Woodland Visitor

Wood Pigeon: 6th December 2021

The Wood Pigeon more often perches on hedgerow trees and in woodland. Here it’s perching on my fence (photo taken through my window).

On the Fence, another title achieved from the list provided for #2021picoftheweek by Maria Antonia.

CCC161: What Was It?

“Jamie?” Gerald waved his hand in front of my face.

I slapped it away. “What?”

“Where were you? Lost in a gaze.”

“Looking at the…the tree,” I said, hesitantly.

“Oh, what have you seen? A woodpecker, yea? A squirrel?”

“Er…um…sure, that’s what I saw, yea just…just a bird.”

But it wasn’t a bird. It was…it was…I didn’t know what. An alien? A ghost? An elf? Yea, right, laughable, yea. But what was it?
