Pick A Pic/CCC#007: The Fairy Hex

Ah me, oh woe, but Life is foul
Ma sent me here to wash our knicks
Our vests and blouses and our *kex
But she told me not
Of the fairy hex
Upon this spot.

Soaken
Broken
Drowned
And taken

Though I clutch to any living body
Drain their warmth and wealth
Though I drink their well-being
Yet never can I return to health

*For those not knowing, kex are trousers

Tuesday Treat: Autumnal Medley

An autumnal medley featuring photos taken during our walk on 17th October 2024. Enjoy

17th October 2024

Our native trees tend to be late autumnal-turners. But the chestnut tree isn’t native, thus its leaves are amongst the earliest to turn yellow and brown and drop to the ground. Below: a pioneering birch thrusts through the chestnut leaves, the attached polypore brackets forming like a ladder

Moss and lichen are year-round features where the ground and air is damp…

I know the song says ‘The holly and the ivy’ but here the berries are rowan and holly

Beech leaves, gold in the sudden sun…

The mist is gone, now all is bright and clear in the sun

So busy looking at trees, we forget the lower woodland storey: Bracken, gorse and (below) the seed-heads of wood-sage caught it that wonderful golden autumnal sun

That’s all for now folks. Don’t forget Fungi Friday!

Sunday Picture Post: Pine, Birch and Chestnut

17th October 2024 we bus into Norwich, and out again. We’re headed to Broadland Country Park. We visited this woodland back in February, when all was bare, and mentally marked it for another visit later in the year. And so, step off the bus and we are here…

17th October 2024

There are several paths through these woods (former pine and chestnut plantations). Which do we follow? To begin, we stay close to the edge

17th October 2024

Despite the morning mist the sun does its best to shine through the trees. This early season it’s mostly the bracken that gives autumnal colour, though the trees’ leaves are yellowing

17th October 2024

Clay soil doesn’t quickly dry and this summer has seen plentiful rain. So here we come to a seasonal rill amidst dark green trees

17th October 2024

17th October 2024

I love to find these delightful vistas through the trees

17th October 2024

Above, birch is the first coloniser of open spaces. Below, beech trees have long since established their foothold

17th October 2024

17th October 2024

Into the pine plantation now. The mist is all but gone allowing the sunbeams to play

17th October 2024

This woodland edges a common. And on the common sheep are grazing…

17th October 2024

And so it’s back to the road to catch a bus home. Hope you enjoyed

Out in the street

Filled my bag
With lots of sweets
