Tuesday Treats: Wood Carving

A treat with a difference. In days gone by felled trees were used in a number of useful ways, most now replaced by plastics. So the timbers are left for Nature to dispose of. Meanwhile they provide homes for wildlife…and the material for would-be sculptors! On our walk of 7th November through East Hills Woods, Costessey, we saw so many wood carvings.

Wow! Look! Someone’s provided us with a place to sit. A shame it’s too early for lunch

7th November 2022

And then this scene greets us…

7th November 2022

A close up… oops, the dragon seems to be munching on a hapless knight!

7th November 2022

And here’s another

7th November 2022

This one looks like a snake, and yet it has legs. A lizard, then?

7th November 2022

7th November 2022

No mistaking this one! I love it’s tongue

7th November 2022

Looks like this one’s coming out of the ground. Is it a burrowing dragon?

7th November 2022

The last of the dragons, they’ve met their end at the end of the woods

7th November 2022

Love this little wood-gnome

7th November 2022

I’ve featured this before, but it has to be included. Child-sized table and chairs

7th November 2022

And a whole array of wood-gnomes providing stools for child-sized botties!

7th November 2022

Hope you enjoyed. It was a little different, and fascinating to see

Sunday Picture Post: The Wooded Hills of Costessey

Before I moved to the coast, I had only to open my door and stroll to be amongst these wooded hills. Now (7th November) we bus into Norwich and bus out to Costessey. But it’s worth it…

7th November 2022

Photos taken just a month ago yet the trees were still so vividly green!

7th November 2022

7th November 2022

Overlooking the River Tud valley AND being at the end of a terminal moraine provides the woodland with plenty hills!

7th November 2022

Those hills have preserved the trees, ensuring the land wasn’t taken in for grain-growing

7th November 2022

7th November 2022

Out of the woods and down the lane a way, we cross the River Tud and detour along its bank where willows hold sway

7th November 2022

7th November 2022

Now we’re over the river, it’s not a long walk to the next wooded hill

7th November 2022

7th November 2022

7th November 2022

We’re heading now to what used to be a common

7th November 2022

Being on gravel and sand, the parish council would set those claiming Poor Law aid to quarrying. Those quarries now have flooded and the land around them grown some trees…

7th November 2022

I have a love of these pools; like some enchanted place

7th November 2022

An earlier attempt to rain now become worthy of the word. But that’s fine cos we’re now heading home, another two buses.

Hope you enjoyed

Beware the Teddy Bear

When goodbye you waved
Deep into my heart you engraved
A pain beyond compare
With a message to beware
Of fast-typing Teddy Bears

Friday Fungi

7th November we returned to the village that had spawned us. Here are two long-established woodlands and a more recent area of woodland pools. Altogether ample fodder for the cameras. Here are a few of the fungi found. Enjoy

CCC213: Sands of Time

When we lived closer to the land
And time was measured by a trickle of sand
Before they mined the coal
To pollute the air and use as fuel
Before that electrifying spark
That relieved the night of dark
Then wind was used to turn wheel and sail
Working with Nature, grim or hale

One of the many windmills that were used to move water from the swampy marshes into the rivers and out to sea, long since replaced by electric-powered pumps

Tuesday Treats: Leaves, Fruits, Flowers and Stuff

Some of the smaller details from our walk to Burlingham Woods on 31st October, chosen for their colours

Impossible to walk past and not notice…

31st October 2022

Orange Spindle berries with their pinky bracts…

31st October 2022

Teasel… of course

31st October 2022

A solitary late flowering knapweed

31st October 2022

Leaves…

31st October 2022

An unexpected dragonfly. And see what a vibrant leaf it has settled on. I couldn’t NOT take that photo

31st October 2022

A browning frond of bracken, dripping in the morning mist

31st October 2022

Tutsan berries stand out against the vivid green leaves

31st October 2022

Contrasting leaves caught in the yew

31st October 2022

It’ll be a while before there are holly berries here

31st October 2022

The plane leaf holds the beech as in an open hand

31st October 2022

A woodland medley of leaves

31st October 2022

And that is all for this week. Check out next Tuesday to see what new colourful treats I have for your eyes

Sunday Picture Post: Burlingham Woods Complete

Last week we left our walk just as we were approaching Burlingham Woods. Now we complete the walk and return for the bus. Enjoy.

31st October 2022

This woodland is part of the former estate of Burlingham Hall, now made available to the public

31st October 2022

31st October 2022

At the end of October most of the leaves still retain their green

31st October 2022

And then there are the pines

31st October 2022

The sun streams through for here the woodland edges the churchyard and a few houses

31st October 2022

Looking up we realise how tall these trees grow

31st October 2022

Time to turn around and come on home…

31st October 2022

When land is left untouched it will revert to woodland

31st October 2022

Between the fields, along the farm tracks…

31st October 2022

So good to see the sun!

31st October 2022

And we’re back to where we begun. Hope you enjoyed.

We’re walking the wooded hills of Costessey next week (the woods of my child-days, always a joy to return). See you then
