We continue our frosty walk on 14th December. We began at Thorpe Marriot with a woodland and a frozen pond, and we walked along Marriott’s Way, beside the River Wensum, to Costessey…where there’s more woodland and more frozen ponds. Enjoy

CCC219: Charlie’s Aunt

Charlie sat on his favourite seat, high on Cannon Hill. Folks might have thought he was gazing out to sea. They might have thought – with how often he was there – that he was waiting for something or someone.

In a way he was, but not for a ship as the townsfolk might have thought. He was waiting for his aunt, or rather her ghost.

A circus performer, she had died when the cannon from which she was supposed to be launched misfired and a fault in the structure caused an explosion.

Thursday’s walk took us over the border into Suffolk and the small harbour at Southwold where every sized boat was hauled ashore for winter repairs. These caught my eye. I don’t need to say why.

Intrigue

It was cryptic, the script which lay before me, written in an Elizabethan Secretarial Hand. By the spymaster himself? Could it be?

It was well preserved; it must have been the best quality vellum, and first time used, not marred with the scrapings suggestive of years of palimpsests.

But what did it mean? And who did it concern? Did its contents lead to the arrest of a traitor, conspirator or the faithful of the wrong sect? Did someone lose their head over this? Did they lay on the rack, sinews stretched until they snapped?

Intrigued, I had to know more.
