My Dad’s Word Plays

My Dad, Dec 2021, Aged 100 yrs & 5 months

My father loved to play with words – a trait which I’ve inherited.
Two of his word plays I remember most clearly.

He would say, The tortoise taught us what to do.
But he’d say it with his mouth pulled tight in tortoise-form.
Then he’d complete it with: Lettuce, pray.

And being good children, we’d chuckle.

His other word play, which I remember, was about cats.
You’ll never see a cat with unkempt hair.
Because they use catacombs.

CCC175: Wilful and Headstrong

“Ann! Ann! If I’ve told you once… slow down, You don’t run down these corridors.”

“Lady Eliza, if I might make so bold, you are awfully harsh on the child. She’s young, she needs to run.”

“Headstrong and wilful, that one. I swear she’s going to lose her head somewhere.”

Prophetic? This was the childhood home of Ann Boleyn.

Sunday Picture Post: To Blickling and Back

28th February, we jump on the bus to Norwich, where we jump on another to take us to Aylsham. We’re walking out to Blickling Hall, one-time home of Ann Boleyn’s family (second wife of Henry VIII). For those interested in the history of Blickling Hall…a feature I posted in 2018.

Love walking rural lanes…

Of Eskin and Trade

Image from pixabay

How could they not know Eskin when they purported to be traders? Eskin was the speech of the peoples to the south. True, the Alsime-speaking Himen shared a fringing of land across the sea, but the Himen didn’t trade on the scale of the Eskin. Hegrea had no time to think on it; the man who’d greeted them and not understood them, now returned.

CCC174: Riddle Me Good

I saw a bird winging on high
I saw that bird fall from the sky
It plummeted as if it must die
I saw that bird upon a nest
Feeding younglings from its breast
