CCC188: There’s Gold in Them There Hills

“What’s this place then?” Millie glanced back at George, her hiking companion who, although younger always was slower.

George slipped off his backpack and pulled out the map.

“Don’t bother,” Millie said, impatient. “I remember now. It’s that prison I saw marked on the map. Open Prison, I guess that means no high walls.”

“That prison is five miles east of here. This is a water treatment plant.”

“No,” Millie said incredulous, “A water treatment plant does not require this much security. If it’s a water plant then it’s a cover for something.”

“Maybe there’s gold in them there hills,” George mocked.

She shot him a withering look. Then, “Watch out!”

George clambered onto the verge to allow the vehicle to pass. It pulled into the gateway. The gate slowly slid open. High Security Transport, the signage said.

“It’s a prison,” Millie said.

“Or there really is gold in those hills.”

I can’t say for certain that it’s a water treatment plant, but the installation does belong to a water treatment company.

Sunday Picture Post: Onward to Halvergate

28th May we bused to Acle with intent to walk to Halvergate. Last week I shared the photos from the first stage of this walk, Damgate Carr. Now onward across Acle Grazing Marsh to Halvergate.

Out of the woods and onto Weavers Way, long distance path

28th May 2022

The Way takes us alongside the reed-fringed Fleet, a drainage channel, maybe ancient tidal creek for time was when this entire area was an extensive estuary

28th May 2022

All kinds of water weed thrive in the drainage channels

28th May 2022

28th May 2022

Weavers Ways wending along

28th May 2022

28th May 2022

A drover’s track crosses the Way… Old Man Willow stands guard. But that’s not the way we’re heading

28th May 2022

Weaver’s Way… on and on, now between willows that creak in the wind. A cuckoo calls from the trees, no hope of sighting it

28th May 2022

We slip through a gate. The Way now crosses the grazing marsh. We have cattle for company, the pastures guarded and defined by a grid of drains

28th May 2022

28th May 2022

A gap in the hedge shows the agricultural land beyond the marshes, that’s where we’re headed

28th May 2022

Off the grazing marsh and onto the road…

28th May 2022

28th May 2022

The road takes us to Tunstall. Despite the parish church is part-ruined, its chancel still serves this very small village

28th May 2022

And here is the village of Halvergate, just its eastern arm

28th May 2022

We walk through the village to the church where we sit in the sudden sun to eat our lunch. Then we turn around and walk back again.

Hope you’ve enjoyed. We’re heading to the Norfolk/Suffolk border next week

The Castle

Bungay: 14th March 2022

They were tourists, obvious with their cameras, and the way they looked into every courtyard, down every alley and lane they passed. They made repeated reference to a leaflet.

Finally, they drew level to where I sat with a coffee at a table outside a café. Curious, I couldn’t resist.

“Are you looking for something? Can I help?”

“We’re looking for the castle,” the bearded one said.

“We’re chasing architecture,” the other chuckled.

I spread my hands. “Look around, architecture everywhere.”

“Huh, vernacular architecture,” the bearded one said with disdain.

A Rose by Any Other Name

Rhododendron: 2nd June 2022

“A flower by any other name would smell as sweet,” said Shakespeare.

Aye, and a rhododendron by any other name would be easier to spell!

Bloom, another title from the list Maria Antonia has given us for #2022picoftheweek

CCC187: Albert’s Old Boat

The Oddfellows lifeboat at Sheringham

It was Albert’s old boat, the boys knew that, pulled onto the salt marsh, away from the tide. The boys also knew Albert was in hospital and word was he wouldn’t be coming home. That boat was idle, left ready with mast and sail,

“Come on,” George said, “give us a hand. Heave-ho.”

Michael looked aghast. “What’d you doing?”

“I’m taking her out for a sail, of course.”

“But… the currents, the tide. It’s a creek but it’s still part of the sea.”

“Scaredy-cat,” George cheeked him.

“We’re not…” he held out his arms. They weren’t experienced sailors. They’d never been out on their own.

“Come on, we can play Swallows and Amazons… get to that island… it’s not so far.”

~~~
It was the coastguard spotted them, the alert raised by Michael’s mother when he didn’t come home for lunch. The lifeboat was launched. They reckoned by then they were halfway to Holland.
