Tuesday Treats: Riparian Flora and Fauna

Photos of flora and fauna seen on last Tuesday’s walk. Usually I group the fauna and separate them from the flora. Not today. Today I give them to you as we encountered them. Enjoy

Surprised to see so many damselflies while we’re still in the heart of the city

Bittersweet is everywhere

As is Traveller’s Joy aka Old Man’s Beard (Clematis vitalba)

Sunday Picture Post: Wending Along the Wensum

In case you’ve missed the news, we here in England have had a heatwave. I know it’s not been a patch on temperatures elsewhere, but we’re Brits and we’re not used to it. Worse, some people (me) have medical reasons why we can’t go out in such heat. But last Tuesday (26th July) the Weather God was in benign mood. And so please join me for a gentle stroll along the wending Wensum. Enjoy

The first of the many bridges we’ll cross over the Wensum. It wends, truly…

26th July 2022

A family of swans

26th July 2022

And ducks. Still within the heart of the city, I think these ducks are used to humans feeding them

26th July 2022

Meadowsweet and Great Willow Herb, for me typifies river edges

26th July 2022

When you take a scenic detour beside a river you expect it to be wet underfoot…

26th July 2022

But it’s worth the soggy soil to be beneath the trees, beside the water, on such a hot day as this is turning to be

26th July 2022

Oh look, another bridge! This one’s for foot traffic and cyclists only

26th July 2022

Not the Wensum but a drainage channel…this area was once very swampy. The green on the water is pondweed

26th July 2022

Meadows to cross to rejoin the main track…

26th July 2022

Heading now to the City Boundary…

26th July 2022

Looking down on the Wensum from yet another bridge

26th July 2022

26th July 2022

These cows have the right idea, seeking shade to chew the cud. We’re looking for somewhere to sit too, it’s coming on lunchtime.

26th July 2022

We’re only halfway through the walk but I’m saving photos from the second half for next week (forecast is hot again, though not heatwave-hot it’s too hot for me, so no walkies next week. Good job I have plenty of photos from this walk!)

Hope you enjoyed. Hope it helped to keep you cool!

Bridge Across the Wensum

St Crispin’s Bridge, Norwich: 26 July 2022

St Crispin is patron saint of shoemakers. After the collapse of the Norfolk weaving industry, the main employers in Norwich were the shoe factories. Alas, most of those have gone too. But  St Crispin remains…as a road and a bridge.

With This Green Plastic Ring

Photo by Victoria Art on pixabay

Timmy waited outside the Girl’s Entrance, his tummy all a flutter. His hands, still damp from their unaccustomed washing, were jammed deep into his pocket.

The rest of her class were out. Where was she? Ah! Here she comes, golden curls in disarray, huge brown eyes bright and alive. Though she walked alone, she was smiling.

“Janey,” he said. “Will you marry me?” And he pulled from his pocket the green plastic ring he’d found in his Jamboree Bag that morning.

She scrunched her nose. “Yes.”

CCC194: Fall Guy

[Trigger Warning]

Tick tock
It’s late o’clock
Meeting my brother at the dock
Injured ego, he’s been defrocked
On a charge of having mocked

Nay, it weren’t like that, he say
T’was all the other way
The flower-ladies came in and gasped
What’s going on they quickly grasped
With skirt round my waist, it weren’t no laugh
Bishop ready with his staff
But Bishop’s the Bishop and who am I?
No career status, I’m the fall guy

Crimson’s Creative Challenge #194

Here’s how it works:

Every Wednesday I post a photo (this week it’s that one above.)
You respond with something CREATIVE

Here are some suggestions:

  • An answering photo
  • A cartoon
  • A joke
  • A caption
  • An anecdote
  • A short story (flash fiction)
  • A poem
  • A newly minted proverb, adage or saying
  • An essay
  • A song—the lyrics or the performance

You have plenty of scope and only two criteria:

  • Your creative offering is indeed yours
  • Your writing is kept to 150 words or less

If you post a link in the comments section of this post I’ll be able to find it
If you include Crimson’s Creative Challenge as a heading, WP Search will find it (theory)
by ‘Searching’ in the WP Reader (fingers crossed)

Here’s wishing you inspirational explosions. And FUN

Sunday Picture Post: Taking the High Road

4th July. Sunny. Hot. We didn’t want long hours on a bus. We went to Norwich then walked to Mousehold Heath, the local beauty spot

A riverside walk, a good way to start the day

4th July 2022

The depth of the valley shows the force of the river over the ages

4th July 2022

Cow Tower, a gun emplacement in ages past

4th July 2022

From River Wensum to St James Hill on Mousehold Heath, a noticeable climb! And a fantastic view of Norwich with its city hall, cathedral and so many churches

4th July 2022

Trees. Shade. Bliss.

4th July 2022

Some inhabitants are very old

4th July 2022

4th July 2022

Climbing up to the heathland plateau…

4th July 2022

Open, exposed to the sun, the trees here already don their autumnal colours

4th July 2022

4th July 2022

A watering hole…great place to sit a while and have lunch

4th July 2022

Alas, time to catch the bus to take us home…

4th July 2022

But there are more photos to come. See Monday, see Tuesday…

When Daddy Was A Soldier

4th July 2022

This used to be the face of Britannia Barracks back in 1937 when my father joined the army (Royal Norfolks). Now it is the face of Norwich Prison. I remember the military tattoos here with the fantastic military bands…all so long ago now. Yesteryear.
