Not His Namesake!

The youngest came in from school. “Mum, I want a pet.”

I’d been expecting this. Two of her friends had recently been given puppies.

“Sweetie, I’d like a pet too. But we don’t have room in this top floor flat.”

She snuck a look at the empty cage tucked into a corner, designed for a parrot, housed a canary. Bequeathed by her grandpa, died shortly after.

Next day, she arrived home with a small cage. “This is Gizmo.”

Eke, a gremlin? No, he was a gerbil.

    • As I said. it’s an almost true story. Later, we gave Gizmo a mate named Giro. And oh boy, did they multiply. I became fascinated with their genetics: offspring in brindle, sandy and albino although both parents were common brindle
