Last night before we ship out again. Some of the crew call this home. They take me on a tour of this crumbling tenebrious port. It doesn’t have proper streets, only rows and alleys, walks and closes. Many of the buildings are crumbling ruins. And the smell of unclean water is pervasive, extending even into the pubs. Only the strongest of scotches, which can also be used as paint stripper, blocks the smell. I drink and I drink, until I see the ghosts. For where else would be more likely a place to see them? They follow me, whispering to me, until I leave behind a half-full bottle to appease them. God, I was never so happy to get aboard ship again.
