I’m getting on a bit, I admit
No, don’t protest, I know my birth year
Seen it written in the hand of the registrar
My point… before I digress my way to the grave
Is that I don’t understand all this fancy talk the youngsters crave
Woke? And equity? And this blind refusal to believe what they see?
That a percentage of we English arose overseas
That Angles and Saxons settled the eastern leas
They’d take away my DNA and cancel me
The Normans took my culture, I’ll not lose my genes
My heritage belongs to me

I think we are getting way ahead of ourselves as humans equipped with technology that makes us feel like we know everything- yet see nothing- even when it is right in front of us. Love your verse- you got me a little hopped up!

A Roman fort to my left, another to my right, and a 3rd 25 miles inland. And in all probability, here’s where my ancestors first set foot on this land, as traders. And the Norman’s…I hiss, as if I have genetic memory. Must be cos I grew up on land that had been part of Harold’s East Anglian estate
