Bill had been her babyhood friend
A friend whose love would never end
There for her through all her cares
Her worries
Her woes
Her annoyances
Her irritations
At failed-to-arrive invitations
He had endured, uncomplaining
Her tear-drenched hugs
Her coughs and splutters of contagious bugs
The tears she’d shed in happiness
The times she’d laughed in forgetfulness
She had always thought he would be there until her end
But Bill’s no more, dirty, tattered, her woebegone friend

Me too. It’s inspired by my sister’s cuddly huggable dog (not teddy), which she still had years after she married.

Love this! I recently had to replace my nearly 40-year old bear with new version. Yes. I am a grown woman who sleeps with a stuffed animal. He’s still with me but he’s nestled safely in a drawer so his head doesn’t fall off!

I envy those who had cuddly huggables. I have 2 teddies now, in my advancing years, but I didn’t have one as a child. Brother & sister did. I wonder the effect that’s had on me?

My original bear (which was gift from a guy I dated for about 5 minutes in college) was a replacement for a rag doll I got when I was a toddler. I have a hard time sleeping without something soft that doesn’t squirm 😉

Both my teddies were gifts from guys. But I can’t sleep with them. I’ll cuddle my pillow. Too long without, I guess

Oh, reminds me of my now 14 yr old grandson who loved his stuffed Baby Froggy with all his heart. That poor thing had been through the wringer and was barely hanging on by a thread but Lucan couldn’t let him go. Then one day he was ready and Baby Froggy was placed on the highest shelf of the bookcase in his room, just keeping an eye on everything.
Wonderful poem, Crispina. 🧸

I gave up soft toys after my furry babies came in.

Thank you, Sammi. A subtle bewail of the fact I had no cuddly ted in my childhood (I had to borrow my brother’s)
