It’s very subtle, but she’s a vampire, living through the centuries, alone.
It’s all in these lines:

There’s a 2012 movie, “Byzantium,” in which the attitude of vampires who lives for centuries gets some examination. You might like it. (Note that the “Byzantium” in the title does not mean any of the movie takes place in Istanbul.)

I think this is something that Anne Rice does in her vampire books (yet, I did read the series in its entirety, though only cos my daughter kept buying them!)

It’s something I play with in the Spinner’s series. Kerrid tells her offspring to find a craft they can devote their long lives to… which is why they have developed technology ahead of we common or garden humanity!
