Did you hear what he said?
The bloody audacity
The cheek, the effrontery
I suppose he said it for comedic effect
Hurt people’s feelings but what the heck
Stir the house into greater hilarity
Modern comedians, can’t raise a laugh
Without risking a slap
I’d slap him. I’d kick him.
I’d poked him out his eyes
And tear off his disguise
Nowt but a boy with a little temerity

Thank you, Bill. I actually felt a little aggression while writing that. Memories of a certain *adult* comedian we used to have on at the theatre where I worked. I had a strong dislike of him; he got laughs are other peoples’ expense (everyone but male, young & white)

Not all humor is funny. Just saying …

Indeed. I worked in a theatre. We hosted many comedians. Some of them I could not even a manage a chuckle. And yet I’ve a good sense of humour

Yes, I think that laughter is something that’s done for all kind of reasons (joy, delight, connection … but also, glee, embarrassment, politeness, cruelty, insecurity). Healthy laughter brings connection over a shared experience. The lesser kind is done at another’s expense and the latter is all too often used to elicit cackles in the name of ‘comedy.’

I worked for years with adult comedians. I saw the worst of them. But I also knew some good ones

Humor in of itself is neutral, and it can be used to great therapeutic and connecting effect… It can also be divisive and hurtful and isolating and full of mockery. Like everything else, in the right hands, it is a talent and a pleasure. In the wrong hands … well … a weapon.

So many of today’s so-called comedians seem to rely on foul language rather than genuine humour to gain laughs. Thank goodness for the few that don’t!

A certain English adult comedian once said within my hearing, “If I don’t get a laugh, I’ll just throw in a f***”

I never appreciated this genre of comedy, myself. So yeah! Git ‘im, Crips!
