Nothin’ like covering all the bases! I love this little guys eyes too. Just cant write anything formidable enough to publish… Not yet anyway…..

I find I can’t see them as anything other than eyes. They remind me of the spirals on the Neolithic passage graves at Newgrange in Ireland… which the inspiration for The Spinner’s Child book cover. But then, instead, I saw snakes. In fact, it’s a scroll. 🙂

You’d not believe the number of such photos I take that never see the outer rim of my computer. One reason I like doing the CCC is I get to use some of these oddities. Though I do try to space them out. For instance, I have a whole collection of carvings from the end of pews, and heads that hold up beams.

The older ones are best. By the time you reach C19th, it’s more matter of flashing off skills. Many of the subjects are the different trades found amongst the old guilds.

Very true. Love those medieval sculptors particularly. They took a licence – often depicting rather rude subjects – that the Victorians would never have stood for

It’s the expressions on faces… and the heads peering out from the greenery, almost always oak.

Ah, yes! Make me want to nip up to Beverley Minster – ever seen the minstrel carvings there? Just wonderful. I worked in the town very briefly and to be able to get up close to them was such a treat

No, I’ve not been. I suppose I’m most familar with Norwich cathedral which has an amazing series of bosses in the cloisters

An ornate scroll on a headstone. It’s all to do with where you crop it. 🙂
