Sunday Picture Post: Flauna

Flauna: A photo featuring both flora and fauna

A peacock butterfly soaks up the sun amidst a bed of red dead-nettles: 17 April 2019

Bees love the nectar-rich dead-nettles: 23rd March 2019

I like the nectar of the harmless dead-nettles too. Just tweak out a flower and nibble the base of the sweet nectar-holding tube. Yum. Makes a walk doubly pleasing. (A word of advice: don’t try it where farmers have been spraying!)

Great job, spotting the “fauna” and catching them at just the right time! I’ve never heard of dead-nettles, hmm. I always appreciate getting your knowledgeable take on the flora in your photos — much more interesting than me thinking, “Oh, pretty pink flowers”.

The Dead-Nettle family (Lamiaceae) was formerly known as the Labiates which include such commoners as sage and mint. Nettle I suppose for their leave-shape, for the flowers certainly doesn’t resemble the stinging variety. Though both do have square stems, and are hairy.
