I don’t go near the old swimming hole no more, not since Emily drowned there. Oh, it looks fine in the day. You wouldn’t think anything is wrong. But a mist hangs over it at night. And even when the wind is still, you can see waves that start over the spot where she drowned.
Emily was like the pond, a creature of nature and a product of mankind. You could see the world in her eyes. I think every boy in town was in love with Emily.
And yet when I remember the horror I saw in her eyes as she went under, I can’t bear to go near the place. And there’s no point in prayers for her, or for those who followed her. There are forms of damnation no prayers can lift.

It’s not other stuff. It’s … WP. I used to get maybe 3-5 likes, and the a couple of comments. And I didn’t do much other than drop a few likes. But since doing the prompts, my figures have soared, and I find it difficult not to comment … know what I mean. I don’t mean you; you’re pre-existing. And I’m developing some really pleasant WP-friends, so I’m not complaining. But all it takes is 4 hours off-line and I’m drowning. Ho-Hum.

I, like you, with the prompts and stuff the numbers have soared and I absolutely answer each and every comment (unless I accidentally miss one!)
Participating in Friday Fictioneers is something else. I read all the stories (except those who don’t interact at all. Those I drop as I realise it is totally one-sided). I could spend all day at the computer and still not be on top of things.

And have you any idea what gmail has done? The text is huge. Yes, I’ve been into settlings, 3 times. I make the changes. I saves the changes. It makes not a sod of difference. Maybe the settings will kick in tomorrow. Today is beting once of these days.

I barely ever use my gmail. I don’t like it. I can’t stand how they group things and then when you want to delete just one part, the whole thing gets flushed. I have it only because of my YouTube channel. Which hasn’t been added to in 5 years.

Just adding, very late, that I got a good chuckle out of Dale’s contribution.
However, I have to admit to getting an even bigger chuckle over the two of you bemoaning the rising amount of activity on your blogs. How dreadful! People are actually reading and commenting on what you have to say! Why, it’s almost as if you intended such an outcome without realizing what it would mean!

I thank you, Brian. I just choked on my yoghurt. And I’m not really moaning about it. And everything is fine as long as the connection remains. But it so quickly builds up. And it’s all good practice for the day I publish The Spinner’s Game and my inbox goes crazy. It’s just .. well. as you know,until a year ago I was the English Hermit.

I might adopt Titus Andronicus for Butcher. And Falstaff would go down a treat around here, based, as he was, on Fastolf, who had a castle at Caister and a warehouse two stones throw from here.

Depends how you’ve set up for notifications. Also, you’ll only get them through if the comments are appended to yours, rather than mine. Experiment. You’ll catch on soon enough.

I got the notifications but half an hour late… it’s the stupid android app acting up. I wonder if WP is this buggy in iPhones. 🙄

I have problems with the Reader deliverying posts on time. I find reloading it every so often helps. But I still receive posts posted maybe 10 hours ago, um, 10 hours later. Weird. Though usually the notifications do come though on the Reader. But then might come through as emails several times. I read, I delete, and lo, they come through again. Beats me. 🙂

Ah! The infernal web of ones and zeroes has us slaving away at building connections but I wonder if it’s winning while we are running circles around it, failing to even register a real presence of another person, slogging away in the virtual world. 😶 Hmm… I shouldn’t have drunk another cup of tea! So sorry! You are absolutely right. The app has a habit of going bonkers with no warning whatsoever!

You might also consider that we’re going through a brief period of solar storm, which is known to erratically and unpredictably affect electronic communications, and Earth is espcciially vulnerable at the moment because our own electomagnetic fields are weakening. I”m told it’s all quite ‘normal’ and nothing to worry about. We’re not going to be ‘fried from the skies’. 🙂

Oh yes, but the solar storms are common though not the powerful ones (which is a good thing). But even when they do happen, the effect on electronic equipments would be related to power outage or disrupted digital signals. The bugs in the app on the other hand are a problem that’s encoded in the language on which a software is built and how it interacts with browsers or responds to commands it’s been coded to follow.
Solar storms can cause mechanical problems: loss of signal, or power, or unresponsive screens due to sudden surge of charges in the artificial satellites.
But we definitely won’t be fried from the skies thanks to Earth’s super wonderful magnetic field. The most we’ll get is a severe power outage with a brilliant display of auroras, the surreal hanging curtains of light you might have seen. But solar storms are really, quite normal. Slight changes in local magnetic fields because of such storms is quite normal too. 🙂

I know about solar storms quite a bit because for fun, I took up a short course in 2017 for the total solar eclipse that happened on August 21. It was learn and teach kind of a project and absolutely fun to do. Also, my field of interest is Physics so I do know something about magnetic fields and the how’s and why’s of it. I am glad you have an interest in science. 🙂

So, what’s your take on the ‘electric universe’, which theory stands in contradiction to Einstein and Newton. In this I don’t refer to the YouTube channels devoted to predictions of repetitious catastophe’s but rather the theory that the universe is held together and functions in all its aspects through the electromagnetic force.

Hmm.. There’s no electric universe per se. The world we live in is neutral. But the soup of elementary particles that frothed and bubbled more than thirteen billion years ago to create the Universe as we see it now, that was highly electric…meaning charged and continuously involved in the dynamics of attraction and repulsion. Who stands contradicted? Well, people like to point out that Newton was wrong. He wasn’t. At least not in ways he came up with his theory of gravitation and laws of motion. They all work perfectly fine as long as you don’t change the scales at which you are look at the world. If you go too small, Newton’s principles need to be replaced by Quantum Mechanics. If you go too fast, it get’s replaced by Einstein’s theory of relativity. If you want to understand how black holes work, you need both Quantum mechanics and General relativity not Newtonian mechanics. But I don’t like saying that one is better than the other. I’d rather ask which problem are you trying to solve? If you want to understand all of Universe, you’ll need different theories to work out different parts of it. For our world, Newton is perfectly good. For using GPS in your smartphone, Einstein’s special relativity is needed because Newton no longer gives the right answer. As for electromagnetic force, it’s a powerful, powerful force. It holds the atoms in you and I together. It hold your laptop and you table and your chair together. But on large scale, like when looking at galaxies, stars or colliding stars, crashing galaxies and solar systems and planetary motions, you know what trumps Electromagnetic force? Gravity. Because on large scales, the mass has become bigger too. So is Universe electromagnetic or is it held together by Gravity? Depends on the scale of the Universe you are looking at. It’s gravity on large scales that wins the battle against electromagnetic force if you want a rough answer. (Large scales and very large masses and neutral mass systems make gravity the dominant force)but then there’s another player in the field and that is the dark energy of which we have no idea at all, which is fighting against gravitational force. But that is another can of worms and this comment has already become a blog post of its own! Sorry about that and apologies for any typos! 😛

We all start as novices. You are more than welcome to discuss anything physics related. I’ll get to learn too. In this reply I have left out myriad minute details and above all, the standard model of physics so as to keep the introduction simple. But introductions in physics often are immersive and thank you for being curious and for questioning. That’s how it all started and why we are where we are in our understanding.
