A Hunter Did A Hunting Go…

4th March 2024

“Jackie, boy?”
Jackie turned back. “Master?”
“Fare thee well?” asked the master.
“Very well.”
“Where goes thee?” asked the master.
“Derry Downs,” the apprentice replied.
“The king’s forest?” asked the master.
“Aye,” replied his apprentice.
“Not to hunt?” the master asked.
“To my hole, down the Down.”
“Hey, thou’st a hole down the Down? Off thee go then,” said the master.
Jackie patted his side where he’d hidden his bow beneath his cloak. And looking around that no one was near, sang with good cheer.
“All for the sake of a merry little doe, amongst those leaves so green-o.”

  1. Simply delightful!

I wasn’t aware of the song, but I found it on YouTube and really enjoyed listening to it!

  2. Lovely photo to accompany this, Crispina. Whenever I see deer, my camera is never ready, and I’m just so thrilled to see them that I don’t even attempt to get it or my phone in case they run off. 💖

    • That has happened to me many times. One one occasion, we had a family of deer cross a really rural lane, right in front of us. And both my daughter and myself had our cameras in hand. But did either of us take a photo? Nope. We just stared, with jaws dropped. But the deer in this shot was the one who stood and looked. With such a willing subject, you have to take those pics!
