30th January, cold but sunny, and while the bus into Norwich is its usual rattle and roll, the bus that takes us into the ‘heart of Norfolk’ is almost luxurious. Such comfort. Oh, but we notice the cold when we get off at Dereham.

The church, with a dedication to St Nicholas, has a separate bell tower. Why? Because the original tower wasn’t suitable to support the bells.

While the church is dedicated to St Nicholas, it’s possible its original foundation was part of the abbey founded by Saint Withburga, daughter of Anna, King of East Anglia (d.654 in Battle of Blythburgh). The spring is named for her…St Withburga’s Well
