Oh, the poor birch tree, host to so many fungi. But at least this one has waited for the birch to fall. It’s species? I cannot tell with certainty, but undoubtedly a wood-eater.

The fallen one looks oddly like a hollowed out lemon. Are they really so bright yellow in color or is it the photo? Not many wood eaters survive the winters here I guess as I have never seen one like this either.

Wooe-eaters tend to be autumn fungi. When it’s wet and still warm. And yes, that is the colour, though maybe not quite so sulphurous. More amber. Sometimes in tweaking the photo to improve definition, colours can change, though I will spot-colour to bring them back to reality. Otherwise we end up with Alice. 🙂
It’s what else is in the shot that determines it.

That is the nature of autumn. I used to think autumn was more about nature’s harvest. But the harvest comes at least a month or two before the decay.

I is!! I’m jumping on a cruise ship with my family (sisters, mother, nieces and nephew) in a few hours.

Though I would hate to be thrown together with my family, I do envy you the cruise, and I know you’re close to your family. So… enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. 🙂

Poor tree. Still, good things come from its demise.

Just think of our world if fungi and insects didn’t break down the dead…
