The interior of this cup-shaped fungus is described in the field guides as dark brown. But herem some show as wine-red. First Nature website shows a photo of a red cup, yet makes no mention of this variation.

They have a preference for fallen oaks and ash. And in dry weather they just look like small hard knobs. Easily overlooked.

I don’t know what they’re showing as red. Websites and guides all say dark brown. On the other hand, it’s thought Black Bulgar refers to the Bulgarian wine skin, and In His Cups, has also a wine association. Who knows.

They do look like little cups filled with water, as though the mushrooms are somehow upside down. That must be because they’re wet in your photo, though — nice effect! The shots of the dry mushrooms on the First Nature site make it clear that it’s a smooth reflective surface, not a cup. I can see why they’re called licorice or jelly drops. They look good enough to eat, which of course should have tipped me off that they’re poisonous.

They open and close according to weather, I think. Or maybe it’s a stage of growth, since along that log were others clearly flat-out, and other tightly closed.
