Last week’s berries were edible. These, while edible, are mildly toxic when raw. Best cooked.
These bright red berries make excellent jelly or jam.

How can that be? I wonder what cooking destroys in order to make them edible? Hmmmm Excellent shot by the way. So vivid.

There are many plant toxins broken down by cooking. You have only think of beans.
And thank you. I caught the sun right … on the other side of the leaves!

EJ makes a fruit liquor in which the alcohol destroys the plant toxin. Itβs a bit slower than cooking: 100 days!

Hey, that sounds better than jam. Even if it does take… more than 3 months? Wow. But that’s a strong one.

I try to remember to double check. In fact, I knew these berries were poisonous to cattle, so I checked it out. Of course, cattle eat them raw, whereas we’ve the ability and wherewithall to cook them.

You would think cattle would somehow know they are poisonous. Nature being what it is, the birds seem to know which berries not to eat. Guess cattle ain’t so smart π

Birds are great at learning. Plus they pass it on to their young. Cattle…? Hmm. As you say, no so smart. Though I haven’t heard of multiple deaths, and farmers are using the shrub-like tree more in their hedges, though I’m thinking they’re not hedges around livestock.

Beautiful shot Crispina π There seems to be movement in it, and the colours are so contrasting to the clear blue sky behind it. Nice! Must have been a lovely day π

It was taken early in the day (allowing for buses). And yes, the day was beautiful. Until it rained. But that’s an English summer. π

It’s raining here now. I just got back in a little damp, but it was nice. The berries look so tempting. I won’t be picking berries if I see any LOL

It’s another dull rainy day. A Fall announcement . It’s good for the trees I suppose.

It is good for the trees, yes. It’s been raining here all day too. Though the only way I notice is the temperature’s down in my flat.
