What Pegman Saw: O Gaia

Mt Everest by Mauricio Junior Pegman

O Gaia, O Goddess, Giant amongst Titans, Mother of gods whose very height frightens
Forgive us.
Forgive our trespass upon your flanks; Forgive our rubbish left at our camps
Forgive our bodies, dead in their quest; Forgive the spikes driven into your breast
Forgive our affrontery, that we seek to conquer you; Forgive us that we do not honour you
Forgive us all the wrongs we do to you; We are but the newly-born next to you

This is excellent! I’m in the process of writing one about the 28000lbs of poo the porters carried back down the mountain last year!

At first I saw photos of majestic peaks. And then I saw the piles of rubbish. But I didn’t need Google to show me. I’d come across the horrific statistics before. including the number of climbers whose corpses remain there.

What a great take on the prompt! Love the language and the prayer and the sentiment.
