The Black Poplar is so named for its ‘black’ bark. Well, this specimen might show black bark, but that’s only because it is back-lit. The leaves too look black, though a closer inspection will show them as rusty-red, as if the tree mistakes the season for autumn.
#2018picoftheweek: Trees

I love your backlit tree! The nice strong black trunk against the texture of the leaves. And yes, it does look a little like autumn 🙂 What a beautiful colour on those leaves!

I had thought of doing the photo as B7W, but I liked the murky blue sky and that vaguest hint of leaf colour. But since that colour isn’t immediately noticeable I then had to include the close-ups. As trees go, the black poplar is one of my favourites, but not so often seen as oak, ash, hornbeam and beech which were the farmers’ choice for timber-trees around their farms. (and then they made ships of steel so the trees were left there to grow, and grow, and grow)

I like the hint of red in the leaves, too! I’m glad you didn’t go B&W on this one. 🙂

That’s the reason I included the two smaller photos. I feared it wouldn’t much show on the main one.

I thank you. Amazing I had time to go out with the camera with everything else!
