9th January 2024, first walk of the year, and it’s a tad cold, and the wind is howling. But we’ve been promised sunshine. So hats, gloves and thermals on, and let’s go. We’re headed to Whitlingham Country Park. Although we expect some flooding, at least we know we’ll see swans!
The bus drops us a mile or so from the park, so first thing we see is…

Here at the Country Park the first (small) lake has flooded its sides, but the path is passable. Or so we think. But just beyond this corner is a wide and deep flooding, so we double back to find another way through

We wanted to circumambulate the lake but this isn’t the only stretch impassable without thigh-high waders. And so we decide to head for the woods. We’ll pick up that trail next Sunday.

The light is beautiful in these photos, and shows the cold. The terrain and light of your walks often remind me of my walks on Nantucket, Massachusetts, where I used to live, right down to the finding a way around flooded footpaths. Thanks, as always, for sharing!
