Bend in the Road, another title achieved in Maria’s Antonia’s #2020picoftheweek
Green lanes once were proper roads, taking wheeled traffic from village to village. But when the dictate came that parishes were to metal their roads, some routes were considered not worth the expense. This runs between the parishes of Somerleyton and Ashby, and serves Ashby church

Yea, I think that puddle does it.
It was unintentionally staged. I’d stopped to speak to a dogwalker and my daughter continud on her way.

I like it that there are still unpaved roads, that is if you don’t have to rely on them for daily rides.

They tend to be farm traffic only; walkers, dog walkers etc

The tractors don’t mind and the dog certainly neither.

It’s usually peaceful walking, away from everyday traffic.

In the part of New England where I grew up, some roads were left as dirt. Some were “abandoned,” that is, had maintenance stopped on them, while some were “discontinued,” meaning the right of way was given up. Problem is, often the local authorities were amazingly casual about which action they took, and decades later people often forgot. One town near where I lived had the embarrassment of finding out its monument to its first meeting house was no longer accessible because the road there had been discontinued.

Guess that’s much the same situation. I don’t know what it’s like elsewhere in UK, but in Norfolk & Suffolk, such greenlanes exist in abundance

Farmers use them for accessing fields, but otherwise no motorised vehicles
