A phone call later—oh, it’s a power cut, and the power would be off at least through to midnight. How serendipitous! I used the power-cut to fulfill the #2018picoftheweek: After Dark

Well, I had a choice of the candlesticks and the celtic mirror, or a low-edged dish with about 15 tealights and a circular mirrow. The latter showed great golden light. But I preferred the more subtle. But, please don’t think I have a pink living room. It’s more a kind of greyed lilac or mauve. Yet the entire room looked red under that light.

I did think to move it, but to be honest, it left the composition looking rather weak. Plus it’s very blackness (and it is black), helps to emphasis that this was, indeed, a powercut.

In fact, they’re the second lot of candles I used that night. Thought, admittedly, the first ones were 2/3rds burnt down. And what you can’t see is how blackened the base of one from the flame where I melted it to get it to hold. It’s a tad wonky as well. Oh, the perfectionist in me!

That’s a gorgeous mirror! And how nice that you’re prepared for the power outage with so many nice candles. I like that the room looks red/pink in the candlelight (it looks cosy), but I agree that in regular light, I would much prefer lilac to pink.

I thank you. I bought the mirror for its Celtic look, the intertwine, but it was actually carved in Indonesia. And it’s not that I’m always geared for power cuts, but that I do use candles for chill out times. The candleholders were a Christmas present from my parents, a couple of years before my mother died. I remember her laughing (though I’m not sure that’s the exact word’ and saying , ‘Finally, we get her something she likes!’ Which makes me sound really unappreciative, and it wasn’t true. I distinctly remember when I was 18, my mother gave me a book on mythologys of the world. I still have that book. It was just she and me didn’t gel. 🙂

Presents can be landmines even when the two people do gel; I’ve had plenty of the same experiences. This reminds me that I really should use my candles more often — except that my chill-out times mostly involve reading, and I need plenty of light for that.
