Hey, Whitlingham Boy, are you going to snorkel?
In that ridiculous get up, you make me chortle.
Your flippered feet scare the fish as they slap into water,
A quieter approach is what you oughta.
Done up like that you’ll see nothing but rubbish dumped by the uncaring,
You’d see much more if you changed what you’re wearing.
Whitlingham Boy, fin-flipping into the water,
Change your gear, that’s what you oughta.

I found Whitlingham Boy at Whitlingham Country Park on the outskirts of Nowich. It’s carved as one piece from a tree.
Well done, and your background info’s interesting and helpful. I thought he might be a metal creation or stone carving; it’s intriguing that it was all carved from the same tree trunk. I couldn’t guess what his face mask was to represent. Snorkeling makes sense.

I think it’s an ash tree, or a hornbeam. For the life of me I don’t remember what it was before it was cut, though I must have seen it several times.
I had trouble making out the canoe. To me it looked like a surfboard. Totally illogical with where it is

It’s a brilliantly skilled carving. It’s hard to believe it was all one piece.I admire the ability to bring life to anything through carving. Seems to me it’s a very precious gift.
Well done on the poem btw 😊

Yea, ditto me. And my poem is far from the equal of that; a paltry thing

perfectly told. An amazing carving. Any idea who or why? I made up my own back story which I will post tomorrow, but I am wondering about the real if you know it.

I don’t know that answers. I know they instruct on country crafts… like laid hedges and woven wicker. I can imagine it the work of one of the instructors. Almost certainly done during the summer else I would have noticed it last visit

It is something, isn’t it. Clever, and fun. And so I answered with same… or at least the fun part of it

Wow. The poem is rhythmic and great to read. When I first saw the sculpture, I thought it was metal. But it’s simply great! It’s brilliantly carved.

I can’t take credit for the carving (only for finding it). It’s brilliant, isn’t it.

Thanks. Not responsible for the carving. But as soon as I saw it, I had to take the photo.

Thanks. I so fell in love with that carving. And I posted the photo. And I looked. And I looked. I was beginning to doubt inspiration would call. But then the words snorkel and chortle tapped at the keys…
