The Elder called us
Said there was business outstanding from the last meeting
Said sadly some of our numbers were missing
Said that was due to foreign intruders who have taken to eating us
We asked what could we do
Could we retrieve our nuts from their pooh?
He said look around, do we see many saplings?
And we looked, but we couldn’t see any
No new generations that we might call younglings.
Will we be the last of the Ents?
Destroyed by imported grey immigrants.
A word of explanation. Those wonderfully cute grey squirrels are not native to Britain and can, in the right (or wrong) circumstances, by stripping bark off our trees, cause their demise.
Poor ents.

Yea, and that after they survived the collapse of Middle Earth!

It’s hard for all creatures to survive these days.

We might moan about what seems for many the end of days. But it’s not a new thing.

It isn’t but this time if humans don’t mend their ways, it might be

The cycle of life is often brought of track by introduced species ☹️

The grey squirrel has been with us for some time now, and some folks think them cute and feed them. But they are not native, they damage the environment & basically they’re rats with fluffy tails.

Just like pigeons are rats of the sky 😟

Sad and beautiful poem, and so true. Invasive species, ‘good and bad’, stand for a changing world.

Yes. We both care for our environment, kindred spirits (like your elf)

How often non-native species are brought in, only to wreak havoc with the original residents! Cute only goes so far…

Yes. Think of the rabbits in Australia. And whatever the weed is in the Everglades. And that’s just for starters

Oh yes. But I think we’ve all learned the lesson now. We just have to find ways to live with our idiocy

Change, as with all of us, is never simple or one-directional.
