On Beltane Eve

Wayward! Wayward? That’s what they said.
Wayward, because I wouldn’t follow where they led.
Wayward, because I took a different route.
Wayward, as if I were a woodland brute.
Wayward, because I walked a different way.
Wayward! And now I wait for break of day
When the black-hooded man must come for me.
But better hanged than burned in their god-spelled glee.
Wayward, I celebrate the birth of Earth again
On this today, the Eve of Beltane
