Our political leaders refer to our fight against this pandemic as a WAR… which sends my thoughts to other times and other wars – particularly to World War I, apt since the Great Flu Pandemic followed.
How did our folks keep their spirits up, knowing what an impossible fight they had on their hands? Might we, in remembering them, learn how we might do the same? Thus I give you two popular songs of that time and challenge you to find us a suitable sing-along-song to raise our spirits now
I hope this post generates some good ideas for a singalong. And if the virus is the enemy maybe the world’s people could come together as allies to fight against it. Soldier on, Crispina.

United against a common enemy. Unfortunately at the moment it isn’t looking like that, with the European countries closing their borders to each other and EU refusing aid to the worst hit EU countries. Indeed, France blocked the export of medical masks destined for UK, despite they’d been paid for.
However, I believe intel is passing between the medical heads and that’s what counts.

I always find Pack up your troubles very moving. I know it’s supposed to be jaunty and positive, but just the fact that those boys facing danger and the horrors of the front sang it to keep their spirits up. And that line about having ‘a Lucifer to light your fag’, focusing on the smallest of home comforts to sustain themselves through their hardships. It’s very moving. Good choice, Crispina

I agonised about whether to post it… because it does have many layers, and can bring a tear, and I have vowed to keep it light.

Stirring stuff though

Thanks. Not so many suggestions as I had hoped. I’ll post my own suggestion next Tuesday. Meanwhile, I found some parodies on YouTube.

I think it’s a good idea. To remind people of the adversity we have overcame in the past.

Thank you, Susan. I do wonder if anyone will suggest a song… and if so, what it will be.

I know which war time president you’re thinking of… lol.
As a good American Protestant, I *must* talk about some of the hymns written about the time of WWI. Like “I see a Crimson Stream”, “There’s Power in the Blood”, or “The Old Rugged Cross”. Some of the bloodiest, most horrifying hymns were written in this time frame, and I love it.

None of which is familiar to this British pagan. And while any of them might have een stirring and enheartening to the troops of this day, would they perform the same service for us?

Lol, no, they’re bloody as hell and the stuff of nightmares.

Definitely not the sort of thing to enhearten the *troops*. Dale has suggested Bob Marley’s One Love. It has good qualities

Yea. Plus I like to be off the laptop for at least an hour before I go to bed, preferably 2 hours. Otherwise I have wicked sleep. Having recovered from ME/CFS I’ve no intention of sinking back into it

Son’s birthday. They were partying – the few that could be within 6′ of each other, that is. And I ended up watching some movie and lost track of the time.

Nah! Up and at ’em!
Gonna write my FF, walk Zeke, wash my sheets, maybe go crazy and clean the house

Arg, cleaning. Disturbing the dust. Then comes the sore throat, itchy eyes, wheeziness, dripping nose, cough… the virus? Nah, house-dust allergy. So I let the dust rest. Excuses, excuses. 🙂

I don’t even have an excuse other than my vacuum is a piece of shite and hardly makes a difference and I’m lazy.

Well, yes, that last item too. I do it when it annoys me, when it distracts me from the writing. But I do suffer for a couple of days afterwards.

Haha! Here’s the irony. I love a clean house. I loathe doing it.

Yes, they don’t make songs like that anymore. When I was on my walk last week and someone was playing ‘We’ll Meet Again’, it was very poignant.
