I gazed upon the magnificent curves of the barrier. Built to withstand the onslaught of intruders from both near and far. How many are the untold stories of pain and sacrifice
of the labourers who erected it: This Great Wall of Norfolk?

Love it. Enjoyed your take.
The photo was taken at Whitlingham Country Park, the woodland being part of the former hall, and much quaried in the past for aggregates, hence the steepness of slope.

A fence went out for a walk one day
And came back to me by another way.
“I’ve been to the hills and valleys and streams,
To the land of hopes and the land of dreams.
To this world I’ve never found an end
No matter how I twist or bend.”
I answered, “There is no end to find,
just the home you left so far behind.
You’ve seen the world from every side.
And now you’ve come home to abide.”
The fence and I, we sat and talked
About all the places we had walked.
And then the fence got up and said,
“I’ve still some byways left to tread.”

That is excellent, Brian. I think you should award yourself a gold star.
But I am wondering if it’s a take on an existing poem, and me being dense haven’t recognised it. That doesn’t detract from what I’ve said. It’s brilliantly done.

If it’s a take on an existing poem, it’s subconscious. Of course, that means we could both be dense. Tell me, when they tossed you in the pond, did you sink or swim? 😉

You know, Brian, there are times I don’t know where you’re coming from, and I want to strangle you.
Okay. So, we’re talking real and actual? It was a river (or stream) and I floundered and doggy-paddled to the bank. If you’re talking figuratively, as has happened several times, I made a pretty good show of swimming, though in all cases I did improve the longer I was there.
Now be so kind as to explain. Please. 🙂

And I’m too dense to catch on. Oh, what has happened to me, not catching on to your jokes. And chill, you didn’t disturb any unpleasant memories. I was dead chuffed that I swam (or at least doggy paddled) to safety. And the other occasions, for a novice I shined.

Besides liking it, I can hear my partner EJ’s voice in it. For her, “hiking” means walking along generally flat ground. Anything else is that abomination called “climbing.”

Norwich is probably the hilliest place in the notorious flatlands of Norfolk… after Costessey, where I grew up.

What a gorgeous photo — the colors, the lighting, leaves on the path — I feel more peaceful just looking at it. I’m going to use this as my “happy place” to imagine myself in during my many boring and/or stressful work meetings today.

Please feel free to use whatever images. As I think I’ve said before, I use my photos as a slideshow on the laptop desktop. Often that’s what decides me on which to post to the blog.

I was thinking only mentally — maybe you know the saying, that when you’re in a stressful situation you close your eyes and “go to your happy place” by imagining a calm, peaceful place. But now that you mention it, this would make a great desktop image for my computer. Thanks!

My place to go is Glastonbury Tor. The view from the top, especially on a misty morn. And the tor channels the wind, to uplift it. I could spend eternity there.

My curiosity got the best of me so I googled Glastonbury Tor. I can see why you love it so much. Yet another wonder you’ve shown me. You’re possibly sleeping by now, I just wanted to thank you.

Not turned in yet. I wish the photos I had of the Tor were digital, but they’re the old film sort. I could have them scanned, I suppose.
I remember one year I walked all the way round the Tor, a mile of so from it, and took photos from every angle. Don’t remember how many times I’ve climbed it. But my best memory of it was one Sunday morning. We were staying in a B&B in nearby Wells. I was out early in the morning, having arrived the night before. So I walked with intent to explore Wells, officially the smallest city in England (a city must have a cathedral. Look up Wells cathedral; the west front is beautiful). Anyway, my path took me across the local school’s playing field. And there in the distance, rising above the early morning mist, was Glastonbury Tor, with its church tower topping it. I swear it looked like it was floating about the cloud. Magical. I’m not surprised it has spawned so many fantasies.

I have used the experience of Glastonbury in the next book to be e-pubbed after The Spinner’s Game, Neve, which will go out as Bellinn Road. Though nothing magical happens there.

Amazon does a free Kindle app to download on phone or tablet or, as with me, on the laptop. But I do have Kindle as well. Cos I can’t snuggle up with the laptop in bed!
And the great thing is… you can make the fonts super big!

Not sure where to reply to individual comments….but love Brian’s poem…beautiful and fitting for the fence in the image framing the pathway. It does have a life of its own.
EJ would LOVE Florida…its FLAT!! I remember visiting my brother in California and their neighborhood (in the shadow of Mt Diablo) has the loveliest hiking path with lots of hills and valleys great exercise and it was in October with perfect temps. While I hate stairclimbing or stairclimbing machines (except stairs within lighthouses), I wish we had hiking places with a few more ups and downs here in flat Florida.

I seek out our few hills. They mightn’t be high, but we do have some steep ones. But I do miss my weeks away in southern England, for the hills.

Judy, thank you. Crispina will probably be horrified to know my first thought was to think of the Drunkard’s Walk.
Yes, EJ would go for hiking in Florida. She recently got tricked on my family reunion into hiking uphill for a few hours, more than once. She’s short and sometimes has knee problems, so these experiences aren’t as pleasant for her as the scenery should make them.

I feel for EJ. Even though I enjoy a good uphill pull. It’s the downhills I don’t like. I keep slipping on stones and sticks and things, and too many times I’ve come down on my butt.
