Sunday Picture Post: Butterflies and Blackberries

Meadow Brown butterfly: 31st July 2019

A meadow brown butterfly rests upon a head of unripe blackberries, a perfect blend of colours.

And the meadow brown as more often seen: at rest in a meadow.

  1. Capturing butterflies with camera is such a tough task! I don’t have a single snap of it. Also, I didn’t know unripe blackberries looked so yellow.

You have to take whatever chance the butterfly gives you. They bask in the sun, so it’s wise not to throw your shadow over them. This wasn’t the best of shots, or so I thought at the time. Yet I like how I’ve caught to, almost on the same horizontal plane, just enough tilt to see the colours that define the species.
And I’d call the blackberries green at this stage, although the old stamens are kind of an ochre/orange colour around them.

      • Thank you for the tip! Next time, I will try my best to take the snap.
And I think your picture is really good. No good photographer thinks her picture “too perfect” when it’s just taken, I guess.
Yes, they do seem quite green. 🙂
P.S. a very random question, but do you like cricket? (the game)

Second person in a month to ask me that. No, I’m not much into any sport. I’m not competitive enough. I prefer the things you do on your own, to compete against your personal best, I suppose.

      • Oh, I see. 🙂
Actually, after the so dramatic World Cup finals, I think even many non-cricket fans are attracted to it.
I also like things we do on our own, and except cricket I watch no other sports. (Well, I left watching cricket in 2015, but had to restart after the world cup.)

Sorry. It leaves me cold. Maybe an aversion gained in childhood?

  4. Lovely Crispina, I don’ think I’ve ever seen a meadow brown in the flesh – at least not that I know of anyway 🙂

It was along a field boundary hedge and ditch, no great length, and they were everywhere. And gatekeepers, though I only managed one shot of the gatekeeper, and that wasn’t magnificent. At times there were up to ten butterflies on one head of flowers. I’ve never seen the like.

Great shots, both of them. It shows how you don’t have to be bright and rainbow-colored to be pretty.
