No, it’s just because they go ‘inky’ as they decay. Sometimes all you find is a disgusting inky mess. There are several species in the family. I like them. they’re easy to recognise.
I took loads of photos of inkcaps last week too, but I’m holding them back for now: they might just answer one of the photo challange titles.
Good eye! I had the same question as Lynn about the inkcaps. What an interesting mushroom! I was just listening to an interview on the radio with someone who makes inks out of found substances — not just natural but also urban detritus like rusty nails and brick dust. Which of course makes me wonder if maybe you *could* make ink from inkcaps. Hmm…
I’m sure at some time someone has tried. In Europea ink used to be made from the oak gall (which is produced by the incubating grub of a wasp) but it was also mixed with red wine. Burgundy, I think. So I guess it would smell nice. No wonder writers were so often found in the wine bars!
As an inquisitive kid I also tried making ink out of found objects. But I was never successful. Guess I didn’t know about gummy stuff for fixing the colour.
Hey, what’d you know. Though even as they begin to ink-up, they don’t invite my hands to get any nearer. I’ve seen some that are a totally inky mess. Yik.

That first image is just perfection. Do you know if they were used to make ink or just earned their name because of that inky staining round the cap?

They’re weird looking things – and sound revolting once they start to decay! Looking forward to more fungal photography!

I shall oblige you tomorrow. Though, warning, tomorrow’s offering could be seen as … a little bit naughty. 🙂

I looked it up and apparently you can make ink from inkcaps, how fun! None of the pages I found showed an example of what it looked like, though.

I love these weird little discoveries — definitely being added to my Eneana landscape. 🙂

Imagine inkcaps grown to the size of a goat, and it inks up, and slowly decompose into a black stinky and inky puddle. Right in the hero’s path …

I was also thinking of special rare varieties of inkcaps, where writing with the ink is *magical*.

Wow, yea. That would be brilliant. You need to check out the other species in the family. There are more than the one’s I’ve featured.
