The Winter Solstice and the Turning Tide

Cromer seafront at high tide at sunrise

High tide and sunrise coincide (Photo taken at Cromer close to autumn equinox with the sun rising due east)

As the outgoing tide takes away
Friends and lovers who are travelling far
So, too, alas, with the outgoing year;
And we cannot yet see what those losses are

But as the outgoing tide scours the shore
Cleaning the sands of filth and debris
So, too, if we let it, the outgoing year
Will cleanse our lives most ably

But, too, as the incoming tide of ages past
Brought plagues and armies of Viking-ferocity
So, too, remember, that incoming year
Could bring us many a modern calamity

Yet, as the incoming tide, all unexpected
Brings home long missed friends and loved ones
So, too, the incoming year might yet bring us
Babies or in-laws, a chance meeting, romance

In such a way the Winter Solstice,
The turning of the solar-year,
Is best to be likened
To the grinding loss and gain of the tides.

Yes the turn over of the seasons brings change always and the sea scours the shore. I look forward to al those good things in 2017….the coming of friends and babies and interesting projects and success. Thanks for the photo and verbal imagery!! So true.

Merry Christmas to You and yours from sunny south Florida!!

I thank you Judy. And of course, while the warmth is delicious (and much missed at this time of the year) yet it’s not the only warmth of offer. The love that passes between friends and family always seem to be bounteously enriched come this holiday season. Blessings of the New Year upon you and yours.

Usually I’ll liken the solstice to a door that swings both ways. It lets in (hopefully) the stuff while letting out (hopefully) the bad stuff. But I had editing my holiday photos, all those tidal shots, and so came a different analogy
