He Did Not Come

He Did Not Come

(A Short Story)

She waited by their meeting tree.
But he did not come.
She asked his friends of him.
But he did not come.
She sent a note informing him.
But he did not come.
She birthed the infant at God’s own door
and, ruined, shamed, she left the place to return no more.
As for him, he did not come.

(Inspired by the movie, A Summer Story, 1988.)

Though the movie was set pre- and post-WWI, this is no scenario from another age. For, with all that’s changed, the unclaimed child still arrives. And just the same, he does not come.
